What does the Bible say about money?

Money is one of the things the Bible talks about most — more than heaven, more than prayer. And what it says doesn't fit neatly on either bumper sticker. It's not "money is the root of all evil" (that's a misquote), and it's definitely not "God wants you rich." What Scripture actually teaches is more honest, and more freeing, than either of those.

It's not money — it's what money does to your heart

People love to quote this verse and get it slightly wrong. Here's what it actually says:

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

1 Timothy 6:10

Not "money is the root of all evil." The love of money. Money itself is neutral — a tool. The danger is what wanting it can do to you, the quiet way it can take the throne in your heart. Jesus said you can't have two kings:

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Matthew 6:24

"Mammon" is just an old word for wealth treated like a god. Jesus isn't against you having money. He's against money having you.

The cure for money worry isn't more money

Here's the part that actually helps when you're lying awake doing math. The Bible's answer to financial fear isn't a bigger bank account — it's a bigger view of who's holding you:

Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Hebrews 13:5

Read the logic there: be content, because God said he'll never leave you. Your security was never supposed to come from the number in the account. It comes from the One who promised not to walk away from you — broke or not.

What to do instead of worry

Jesus gives a startlingly practical instruction for someone anxious about money — it's about order. Put God first, and let the rest sort out behind it:

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:33

"Seek ye first." Not only — first. Work hard, budget, plan; and put God ahead of all of it. That's not a magic formula for getting rich. It's a reordering that takes the panic out.

And he's promised to provide

This doesn't mean you'll get everything you want. It means you'll have what you need, from a source that never runs dry:

But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

A prayer

Father, money has had too big a place in my heart and my worries. I'm putting you back first. Thank you that you've promised never to leave me — so my security doesn't depend on my balance. Give me what I need, make me generous with it, and take the fear out of it. I'm trusting you to provide. Amen.

If money is the weight on you tonight, you don't have to carry that worry by yourself either. It isn't too small or too embarrassing to pray about out loud — write it down and let others stand with you and ask God to provide.
