How to fast and pray (a simple guide for beginners)
Fasting sounds intense — like something monks did in the desert, not something a normal person with a job and kids does on a Tuesday. But Christian fasting is simpler than it sounds, and it isn't about earning points with God or twisting his arm. It's about clearing space to seek him with everything you've got. Here's how to actually do it.
What fasting actually is
At its simplest, fasting is choosing to go without food (or something else) for a set time so you can focus on God. The empty stomach isn't the point — it's a tool that keeps turning your attention back to him. Notice where God puts the emphasis:
Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning:
Joel 2:12
"Turn ye even to me with all your heart." The fasting serves the turning. It's the heart God is after, not the hunger.
Keep it between you and God
Jesus gave one clear rule about fasting: don't perform it. It's not a thing to be seen doing.
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.
Matthew 6:16–18
Keep it quiet. This is between you and your Father, not a status update.
What God is really after in a fast
Fasting isn't only inward. God connects a real fast to a softened heart toward other people:
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isaiah 58:6
How to start (keep it simple)
- Start small. Skip one meal, or fast from sunrise to sundown one day. You don't have to do forty days your first time.
- Pick a focus. Fast about something specific — a decision, a person you're praying for, a breakthrough you're seeking.
- Replace the meal with prayer. When you'd normally eat, pray or read Scripture instead. That's the whole exchange — food for time with God.
- Drink water, and use wisdom. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or take medication, talk to a doctor — you can also fast from something other than food (screens, sweets, TV).
- Break it gently. End with a light meal, and a quick prayer of thanks.
A prayer
Father, I want to seek you with more than my leftover attention. As I fast, turn my heart fully toward you. Use the hunger to remind me to pray. Meet me in it, soften me, and do what I can't do on my own. Amen.
If you're fasting and praying over a specific burden, you don't have to carry it alone — share it here and let others pray and even fast alongside you.
